Arms imports don jump by 104% go N55bn

Naija importation of arms and ammunition rise by 104.31 per cent for the first half of 2026, and e climb go N55.06bn from d N26.95bn wen dem record for the same period of 2025, as concerns dey mount becos of weapons wen full everywhere ahead of next year general elections.

Latest data on foreign trade wen dem access from the National Bureau of Statistics for the second quarter of 2026 show say the country import more than N55bn worth of arms for inside six months.

Reports say the inflow of arms happen barely one year before the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC go conduct the 2027 general elections. 

INEC don schedule the Presidential and National Assembly polls for January 16, 2027, and the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for February 6, 2027.

Meanwhile, the arms import increase based on the earlier report wen say the Nigeria Customs Service stop about 603 firearms from entering the country between January and August 2026 and dem don hand over the weapons wen dem seize give the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons.
